  • E. Introduction
    a. The air respirator consists of a mask, a gas cylinder, a high-pressure relief valve, an alarm whistle, and a pressure gauge. A pressure-reducing valve is required to allow the use of the equipment as a positive pressure device. This ensures that the air pressure inside the mask is greater than atmospheric pressure, so any leaks at the seal are directed outward. That is, smoke or dirty air cannot be drawn into the mask. The backplate connects the wiring harness and includes a method of securing the cylinder. It is possible to provide an alternative air supply connection.
    b. Each cylinder shall contain not less than 1200 liters of fresh air. Air is supplied to the wearer via cylinders, but there will be a means of passing through or over the regulator to increase the amount of air available to the wearer when required.
    c. A spare refillable breathing air bottle is also required to be carried.
    d. The pressure gauge enables the wearer to determine at any time the pressure of the air remaining in the cylinder.
    e. The warning whistle indicates that the wearer’s cylinder capacity is insufficient, and he should leave the unsafe scene as soon as possible.
    f. Fire-resistant rope is also provided. The lifeline must be at least 3 meters longer than is required to reach any part of the ship from the open deck in clean air.
    g. The weight of the equipment must not exceed 16kg (excluding the lifeline).
    h. Like other firefighting equipment, breathing apparatus must be stowed in an easily accessible location so that the road cannot be cut off in the event of a fire. Except in passenger ships (British I Class) there are fixed stowage positions for the two firefighting outfits, but they should also be stowed at decentralized locations.
    i. In an enclosed space, respirators provide an open space when toxic or choking fumes are present. Respirators may also be needed to search for missing persons after a fire or other accident.
  • F. Cylinder
    a. Each set of air-breathing apparatus must be equipped with gas cylinders, and the total capacity of the spare cylinders is greater than 2400 liters. In practice, this usually means two spare cylinders for each set of respirators. However, there are two exceptions:
    1. On ships equipped with more than five breathing apparatuses, the reserve capacity of the entire ship shall not exceed 9600 liters.
    2. If the spare cylinders can be refilled on the ship, only 1,200 liters of spare breathing air is required for each; however, the storage capacity of the cylinders provided for the entire ship shall not exceed 4,800 liters.
  • G. Air compressor
It is a special portable air compressor specially used to compress and inflate gas cylinders. They can be portable or fixed. The air intake must be adjusted and set to avoid the entry of water or harmful fumes, even in the worst case.
  • H. Care and Maintenance
    a. Inspection and maintenance of any self-contained breathing apparatus must be performed by professionals and in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Detailed instructions for each set will vary by make and model.
    b. After each use of the equipment, it must be kept in a ready-to-use condition. Follow the detailed instructions given by the manufacturer; usually include the following:
    1. Thoroughly clean the equipment
    2. Clean the mask and harness (use warm, soapy water)
    3. Check whether the whole set of equipment is damaged and whether each accessory is loose
    4. Install a full gas cylinder
    5. Complete the high-pressure and low-pressure tests to sanitize the mask
    6. Return equipment to serviceable condition and complete all usage and testing records
  • I. Training
Effective and efficient use of respirators can only be achieved with regular training in their use and care. It is important that the design considers the comfort and ease of operation of the occupant who wears and uses the respirator.
  • J. Pay attention
    a. Respirators are valid for 15 years. When the gas cylinder is ready to be filled, the expiry date of the gas cylinder should be checked. Otherwise, the gas cylinder is not allowed to be inflated to prevent the gas cylinder from exploding. The inflation pressure is marked on the cylinder, do not over-inflate.
    b. The air compressor should be installed in a clean-air environment when in use. If the environment of the air compressor is not good, the gas-filled into the cylinder will be unsafe, and it will cause damage to many parts of the cylinder.
    c. Do not choose to use low-quality gas cylinders to avoid serious consequences caused by gas cylinder quality problems.
    d. If there is a power failure or a sudden stop during the inflation process, the power switch should be cut off immediately and then checked.
