What is a Hydraulic Single Gypsy Drum Windlass?
A hydraulic single gypsy drum windlass is a type of machinery that is used on ships and boats for the purpose of raising or lowering anchors. The windlass consists of a drum, which is able to rotate and hold a length of chain or rope, known as the anchor rode.
The term “gypsy” refers to the part of the windlass that grips onto the chain or rope, and the word “drum” refers to the cylindrical shape of the rotating component that holds the wire cable, rope, or chain. In this case, “single” means that there is only one drum, as opposed to multiple drums that can be found on some windlasses.
The hydraulic system powers the operation of the windlass, providing the necessary force to lift the anchor and hold it in place when required. Hydraulic systems are preferred over electric systems in marine applications because they offer higher power density, better efficiency and reliability, and excellent control over the equipment.
